Aston Villa: Jamie O’Hara rages at ‘stupid’ John McGinn incident as Sky Sports air footage

Aston Villa ace John McGinn was branded by a “fuming” Jamie O’Hara following his red card in the second half of their Premier League defeat to Tottenham on Sunday (10 March).

Unai Emery’s side were dealt a damaging 4-0 defeat by Spurs at Villa Park in the race for Champions League qualification with James Maddison, Brennan Johnson, Son Heung-min and Timo Werner on target.

But their cause was not helped by a wild tackle from Scotland midfielder McGinn, 29, on Destiny Udogie, which left Sky Sports pundit O’Hara – a former Tottenham player – fuming.

He said live on Sky Sports News (10 March, 2:27pm): “John McGinn’s been sent off, really reckless, stupid from him because it kills the team, it’s just pure frustration really.

“Tottenham have been moving the ball around nicely, they haven’t been able to get in the game at all really Aston Villa this second half.

“John McGinn, he comes across, Destiny Udogie is driving forward and McGinn comes from the angle and just completely wipes him out, takes him out, luckily Destiny comes off his feet, everyone has a big jump in, everyone piles in, the referee has a look at it, sends him off.

“It’s a really poor tackle from John McGinn, he lost his head and he’ll be disappointed he let his teammates down for sure, he lost his head and it’s 100% a sending off.”

John McGinn rightly sent off in Aston Villa v Tottenham

It was an afternoon to forget for Villa as they were absolutely destroyed by Spurs on home soil in a game that could have huge ramifications in the race for Champions League football.

It is not just the defeat, it is the psychological impact of losing to comfortably to a rival for Europe’s premier competition and it remains to be seen if Emery’s side can bounce back from this.

But, it has to be said, it was an absolutely mad moment from McGinn, a senior player who just completely saw red – both literally and metaphorically – and a three-game ban just adds to the misery for Villa.

O’Hara was absolutely spot on is his assessment of the incident and it really was a momenet that McGinn and Villa fans will want to forget in a hurry. Sadly, you feel they won’t be able to for a few days because this one will be discussed…a lot.
