Aston Villa: John McGinn should be ‘put in prison’ after incident v Tottenham – Insider

Aston Villa captain John McGinn has been slammed by former Villa Park scout Bryan King after his red card versus Tottenham Hotspur.

The midfielder was shown a straight red card for a rash challenge on Destiny Udogie in the 65th minute of the match on Sunday (10 March).

Tottenham ran out 4-0 winners in the Premier League match, with James Maddison, Brennan Johnson, Son Heung-min and Timo Werner scoring the goals.

Speaking to Villa News, King said: “Ridiculous challenge, absolutely ridiculous. What the hell did he think he was doing?

“Isn’t it funny that a similar thing happened in the game at Tottenham, when Matty Cash went in on Rodrigo Bentancur, who had just come back from injury. He should have seen red there.

“McGinn’s was a red without any shadow of a doubt. Captain? Leader? What kind of challenge was he thinking of?

“If he did that on the street he’d be put in prison. And then to wander around as though he wasn’t sure he was going to get sent off… I mean, get off. There is no place for that in football, I don’t care who you are.

“It could have ended Udogie’s season. I’m glad he was smart and went down. It looked as though he was going to go after him and then he realised, ‘I better hit the ground here.’”

Aston Villa suffer devastating 4-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur at Villa Park

The home side were certainly in the game at Villa Park, and certainly had chances to find the back of the net.

But a stunning second-half display from the North London club blew them away, with two goals arriving before the red card and two arriving after.

McGinn’s sending-off, therefore, didn’t exactly change the outcome of the match, but Emery will still be disappointed with the challenge from his captain, who should have been leading by example.

It was undoubtedly a frustrated tackle from the Scotland international, and one he certainly didn’t need to make.

The home side struggled massively from that moment onwards, although they weren’t exactly going well before that, as the scoreline suggests.
