Sources: Aston Villa once tried to strike up AIK partnership in Alexander Isak deal

Aston Villa previously attempted to sign Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak, Villa News has been told.

Isak has been a big hit in the Premier League ever since he arrived at St James’ Park.

Newcastle United parted with big money to lure the Sweden international to Tyneside, paying a club-record fee of £63million to La Liga side Real Sociedad (Sky Sports News, 26 August 2022).

Isak has found the back of the net 21 times in just 41 Premier League appearances, scoring 11 league goals in 19 appearances across the 2023/24 campaign.

Now, an ex-employee from the scouting department at Villa Park has exclusively revealed to Villa News that Isak could have been scoring his Premier League goals for Unai Emery.

Aston Villa missed an opportunity to sign Newcastle United ace Alexander Isak

Villa News has learned that before Isak moved to Borussia Dortmund in 2017, the striker was on the radar of Aston Villa.

Isak started his professional career in Sweden with AIK Fotboll after emerging through the club’s youth ranks, and according to an ex-employee, Villa were seeking to form a partnership with the Allsvenskan outfit as part of negotiations to sign Isak.

However, AIK opted to go down a “different route” and Isak instead headed to Germany and joined Dortmund before moving to Real Sociedad and eventually Newcastle United.

Had Isak ended up in the West Midlands, Emery could have formed a lethal partnership between the 24-year-old and Ollie Watkins, with the pair scoring 27 league goals between them so far this season.

Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins
Ollie Watkins has been linked with a move away from Aston Villa.

In addition to Watkins’ 16 league goals this season, he has also provided 10 assists in what has been a standout campaign for the England international.
