Aston Villa: £119m+ development emerges in Premier League PSR update

Aston Villa have reported losses of £119.6million in their latest financial accounts, higher than the Premier League profit and sustainability allowance of £105million over a three-year spell.

As shared by BBC Sport [5 March], Villa insist they remain within the PSR allowances, with investments in infrastructure, the academy, charity foundations and the women’s team able to be deducted.

This has come after Everton were deducted ten points, later reduced to six, as a result of their breach of PSR, with another charge hanging over them as well as Nottingham Forest.

The statement given on Villa’s official website [5 March] insists they are compliant with the rules, but given the extent of their losses and previous rumours they may be forced to sell players in order to comply, their situation looks precarious.

Could Aston Villa face a Premier League points deduction?

Given the situations at both Everton and Forest, with new points deductions mooted after their breaches of PSR, Aston Villa will be scrambling to ensure they do not fall foul of the Premier League’s rules.

It has been reported previously that several Premier League clubs are fearful of breaching the limit and will therefore have to cut down on player spending, which led to a quiet January transfer window.

This comes after Villa spent £82.5million on bringing Moussa Diaby and Pau Torres to the club in the summer transfer window, although those figures are not included until next year’s accounts.

In the season including in the current figures, £63.7million was spent on new arrivals, while £22million was made from sales, and the wage expenditure increased from £137million to £194.2million.

They will hope that the form of Ollie Watkins and Douglas Luiz can help them to achieve Champions League qualification, which would then result in increased income to help offset the losses made on both player purchases and day-to-day running costs.
