Ollie Watkins flops, John McGinn stands out – Aston Villa player ratings v Manchester United

Aston Villa suffered another home defeat as Manchester United ran out 2-1 winners at Villa Park on Sunday (11 February).

Rasmus Hojlund put the visitors ahead, with Douglas Luiz levelling for the hosts, only for Scott McTominay to net a late winner.

Here, Villa News rates the Aston Villa players out of 10 for their performances in the clash with the Red Devils at Villa Park.

Emiliano Martinez – 5

The World Cup winner has produced countless top-class displays for his club in recent times, but this was not a standout, with Martinez making three saves against Erik ten Hag’s side [Sofascore].

Matty Cash – 5

Cash tried his best to get forward as he likes to do, but the constant attacking threat from the Manchester United attackers made that difficult. The right-back won just three of his 11 ground duels.

Diego Carlos – 4

Carlos blocked two shots from the visitors, but there was no clean sheet for Villa once again, which will frustrate the centre-back.

Clement Lenglet – 4

The central defender went under the radar at Villa Park, with Lenglet involved in just one duel during his 90 minutes on the pitch, which he did manage to win.

Alex Moreno – 6

Moreno was heavily involved at both ends of the pitch, with the left-back doing his utmost to help out in attack more than defence. He registered three key passes in another impressive display.

Boubacar Kamara – 5

Kamara kept things ticking over at Villa Park as he usually does, even against a talented Manchester United midfield, with the Aston Villa man registering a 94% pass success rate.

Douglas Luiz – 6

The Brazilian ace was certainly not at his best as he was thwarted by Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo, but his goal was crucial, while he was accurate with all three of his long passes.

Leon Bailey – 6

Baile did pose a threat to the Red Devils and certainly shone in his individual battles, with the Jamaican international winning five of his six duels.

John McGinn – 7 (Man of the Match)

McGinn was as busy as ever at Villa Park, with the Scotland ace not giving his opponents much breathing space at all with his energy all over the pitch. He completed 96% of his passes, three of which were key.

Aston Villa
John McGinn couldn’t bring his Aston Villa form to the international stage against Germany.

Jacob Ramsey – 4

Ramsey tried to provide the creative spark in the final third, as the Villa ace often does, but ultimately his final ball let him down, with the youngster having two shots off target, more than any of his teammates.

Ollie Watkins – 3

Watkins did have a few sights on goal, but ultimately he was starved of the ball in the final third, with the striker winning just two of his 14 duels when it did eventually come his way.
