Aston Villa duo Ollie Watkins and Alex Moreno deserve honour, Alan Shearer wowed

Aston Villa produced a scintillating display against Sheffield United on Saturday (3 February), with Unai Emery’s men reminding everyone just how dangerous they are.

The Midlands club stormed to a 5-0 victory in the Premier League clash at Bramall Lane, with five different names on the scoresheet.

John McGinn, Ollie Watkins, Leon Bailey, Youri Tielemans and Alex Moreno all got in on the act, with the five goals scored in the first 47 minutes of the match.

Two of those players caught the eye of Alan Shearer, with the pundit naming Moreno and Watkins in his Premier League Team of the Week.

As per the official Premier League website (6 February), Shearer said of left-back Moreno: “Got on the scoresheet and was always an outlet for Villa down the left side,” with Watkins also getting plenty of praise: “A superb all-round centre-forward’s performance. He ran Sheffield United’s backline ragged to get a goal and two assists.”

The defender really was on top form, with Moreno winning six of his eight ground duels and completing both of his dribble attempts (100%). Moreover, the left-back registered a key pass and made three interceptions and two tackles [Sofascore].

The Spaniard deservedly found the back of the net, as did Watkins, with the striker becoming the first player in Europe’s top five leagues to score 10+ goals and provide 10+ assists this season [Squawka, 3 February]. The striker impressed in other areas, such as winning both of his aerial duels (100%), as per Sofascore.

The duo both played key roles in the stunning win, which incidentally was the club’s joint-second highest away win in Premier League history [Squawka, 3 February].

Aston Villa also defeated Leicester City 5-0 back in the 2003/04 campaign, while they smashed Derby County 6-0 in 2007/08. In a hugely worrying sign for the Blades, both the Foxes and the Rams were relegated in those respective seasons.
