Ty Bracey shares why Aston Villa paid Middlesbrough more to sign Morgan Rogers
We’re delighted to welcome Aston Villa podcaster Ty Bracey as our exclusive Aston Villa columnist each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the club…
Ty Bracey believes Aston Villa paid Middlesbrough more money to sign Morgan Rogers because of a sell-on clause with Manchester City.
Villa signed the 21-year-old from the Championship side on Thursday (1 February) in an initial £8million deal, potentially rising to £15million in add-ons [BBC Sport].
After the English forward signed for Boro for just £1.5million from the Citizens last summer, the Premier League champions held a 25 per cent sell-on fee in the deal.
Bracey believes it’s a “great” signing for the Villans as he hopes Rogers can play an important role as Unai Emery continues to build his squad at Villa Park.
Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Bracey said: “It’s a good bit of business. It’s not a huge chunk of money. If Emery believes he’s the right profile then, by all means, get the business done.
“If we can get that part of the FFP sorted and still have him in there, then it’s a good piece of business. He’s hungry, obviously, he’s come from Man City and then to Middlesbrough before signing for Villa.

“I think the price would’ve maybe been a little bit less if Man City didn’t have a sell-on clause from when they sold him.
“But I think it’s a great bit of business. Hopefully, he comes good under Emery.”
Morgan Rogers will be looking to make an impact at Aston Villa
Rogers came off the bench to make his debut in the emphatic 5-0 victory against Sheffield United on Saturday (3 February).
The forward had a huge opportunity to open his account for Villa when he got on the end of a ball across the box, but he couldn’t guide his effort on target.
He will be hoping to build upon his impressive form for Boro in the first half of the campaign, where he scored seven goals and laid on nine assists in 33 appearances.
