Aston Villa star Leon Bailey dominates in 100% performance v Sheffield United

Leon Bailey was utterly dominant in his performance in the 5-0 Aston Villa win against Sheffield United, earning high praise from Don Goodman, who was left stunned by the winger’s goal.

Villa were rampant at Bramall Lane in their 5-0 win, dominating from start to finish despite a late VAR decision which went in their favour after Sheffield United thought they’d pulled one back.

Ollie Watkins, John McGinn, Youri Tielemans, Alex Moreno and Bailey all found the back of the net as Unai Emery’s team shared the spoils in a display of why they have been so impressive this season.

Commentating live on Sky Sports Main Event [3 February, 17:50], Goodman gushed over Bailey: “It’s absolutely stunning, top, top quality, and that’s why he’s back in the team.”

Bailey was well worth the praise

Goodman’s description of the goal as “stunning” is perfect, the ball found the top corner beautifully and came from just a 0.07xG opportunity, but it wasn’t just his goal that should be focused on in the aftermath of that result.

The Jamaican made his return to the team and should now have nailed down his place. From 23 attempted passes, he found his man with 20 of them and completed 100 per cent of his attempted long passes in a display of his range and versatility. [Sofascore]

He was unlucky not to pick up an assist from his big chance created alongside two key passes as he played an unselfish game, looking to set up his fellow forwards after taking his goal perfectly in the first half.

Alongside that 100 per cent long pass accuracy, Bailey also recorded a 100 per cent dribble success rate and a 100 per cent ground duel success rate, dominating the game and providing a constant source of an out ball while he was on the pitch.

The winger was eventually withdrawn in the 60th minute with a busy schedule on the horizon and an FA Cup replay with Chelsea coming up, and Unai Emery will want him fresh for that game.

Even before his game today, Bailey’s performances this season have seen a real step up in quality, earning high praise from Alan Hutton, and if he keeps playing like this he will soon become undroppable.
