Joe Gauci signs contract as Aston Villa fee agreed for new transfer – Fabrizio Romano

Adelaide United goalkeeper Joe Gauci has signed his contract to become an Aston Villa player until June 2028, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Italian transfer specialist reported via X [1 February] that The Villans would pay £1.3million plus add-ons for the 23-year-old shot-stopper amid a move to Villa Park.

The goalkeeper has been a consistent performer for Adelaide this season, starting 10 of their 14 league matches so far.

One for the future

Gauci is certainly a signing for the future, presented with the opportunity to learn from “Best Goalkeeper in the World” Emiliano Martinez.

He has most recently been on international duty with Australia at the Asian Cup. Despite being one of the back-up ‘keepers to veteran Mathew Ryan, it is an incredible feat to feature for his national team, having won just his second cap in a friendly before the tournament began.

With Robin Olsen the only other goalkeeper in Unai Emery’s senior squad, it is vital that Villa begin to bring through new blood for the positions that have older-aged players.

Martinez is the undisputed number one in Emery’s team but the idea of Gauci joining, a young Australian star with a high ceiling, will hopefully spur the Argentine on and create competition in the side.

Gauci boasts 76 appearances for Adelaide since joining the club in January 2020, developing into an incredible talent that the Premier League outfit have now captured.

Although the shot-stopper will need to gain much more development at a higher level, there is no doubt that Gauci can become a big talent at Villa Park with the right guidance and leadership.
