Morgan Rogers agrees five-year Aston Villa deal as Manchester City clause emerges – Fabrizio Romano
Morgan Rogers has agreed to a five-year contract with Aston Villa and is set to complete his medical today before signing the deal, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The transfer journalist reported via his X account on 31 January that Manchester City will be owed 25% of the transfer fee paid to Middlesbrough as a result of a sell-on clause in his deal.
Rogers joined Boro from City for just £1million in the summer and now looks set to move to Villa Park for £8million with a potential £7million in add-ons [The Athletic, 30 January] with his medical booked today.
A great deal for all parties
This is one of the rare transfers where all parties involved can be happy with the outcome. Boro, of course, won’t be happy to lose a key attacker in January, but they have made a large profit on their investment after just half a season.
City, meanwhile, will return another decent profit on a player who did not play a single minute at the Etihad Stadium since joining from West Brom in 2019.
A total transfer fee of £15million also suits Villa, with the £8million immediate fee representing an especially good deal when compared to other moves from the Championship in the past – particularly in January when it is notoriously difficult to find value-for-money deals.
For Rogers, a move to Villa will see him return to the West Midlands having come up through the West Brom academy. As soon as this transfer was rumoured earlier in the window, it became clear the forward was keen on the deal, and he will be excited to finally complete the move.
In other Aston Villa news, the club must hold on to a 79% gem in this transfer window.
