Ex-Aston Villa Scout shocked by Morgan Rogers deal as Fabrizio Romano shares update

Villa News is delighted to welcome aboard our brilliant new columnist Bryan King, the former goalkeeper who spent over 10 years as a scout at Aston Villa and 28 years in total in first-team scouting roles. Bryan also spent six years on Tottenham’s recruitment team and eight years scouting at Everton…

Bryan King is “very surprised” that Aston Villa are signing young attacker Morgan Rogers from Championship club Middlesbrough.

As per Fabrizio Romano (31 January), the 21-year-old is set to complete a medical at Villa Park ahead of a five-year deal.

Rogers has made 33 appearances in all competitions this season for Middlesbrough, registering seven goals and nine assists.

One of those goals came against Premier League opposition earlier this month, with the attacker netting in the EFL Cup semi-final meeting with Chelsea.

He also lined out against future club Aston Villa this month, with the Midlands side winning that FA Cup third round meeting 1-0.

Speaking to Villa News, King said: “Well, it’s surprised me. Against Premier League opposition, especially Chelsea last week, he looked very ordinary. I am very surprised that they are going to go through with that deal.”

The deal for Rogers will be the last for the Premier League club in the January transfer window, with Unai Emery noting: “There will definitely not be any more incomings after Morgan Rogers,” as quoted by Fabrizio Romano.
