Leeds United have cash to complete last-minute signing of Aston Villa defender Calum Chambers

Bryan also spent six years on Tottenham’s recruitment team and eight years scouting at Everton…

Former Aston Villa Scout Bryan King has mooted a League One transfer for Villa Park centre-back Calum Chambers.

The 29-year-old defender has made just three appearances in all competitions this season, amounting to just 178 minutes [Transfermarkt].

As per The Athletic’s Jacob Tanswell (12 January), Chambers has been told he can leave Villa Park this month, along with winger Bertrand Traore.

Speaking to Villa News, King said: “I never fancied him, even when he played for England Under-21s. He could fit in in the Championship, but I think he could be looking at the top of League One as well.

“Leeds have got the money for him, they went down last season and still have the parachute payments. This is why I think it’s an unfair playing field in the Championship, these teams are coming up and down at will. You get rewarded for being relegated.

“I don’t think Chambers is a good defender, it surprised me when he went to Villa, but I’m not surprised that Villa want to move him on.

“I’ve never fancied him as a Premier League player. Certainly top half of the Championship, I don’t think he’s good enough.”
