Unai Emery could sanction Jacob Ramsey sale at Aston Villa as medical booked for multi-million Morgan Rogers signing
We’re delighted to welcome former Aston Villa full-back Alan Hutton as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Villa Park…
Unai Emery could sanction a last-minute sale of Jacob Ramsey in the final days of the January transfer window after Morgan Rogers’ medical was booked at Aston Villa, according to Alan Hutton.
Reports emerged from Fabrizio Romano on Tuesday (30 January) that a verbal agreement is now in place for Rogers to join Emery’s side at Villa Park on a permanent basis, with the 21-year-old expected to complete his medical tests in the next 24 hours.
However, news also emerged on Monday that Newcastle United have approached Aston Villa to buy Ramsey before the transfer deadline, with Bayern Munich and Tottenham also holding an interest in the star who Villa value at around £50million [David Ornstein, 29 January].
While Hutton admits that he would be keen to keep Ramsey at Villa Park beyond the end of the January transfer window, he did admit that one transfer can often kickstart a chain of events, especially late in a window.
“I think whenever you’re going to let players go, you need to have options to bring somebody in,” Hutton told Villa News.
“A lot of the deals hinge on it. When I was moving in January it was a case of we want you, but we need to get rid of this player or the team selling you needs to wait until we can bring somebody in.
“There are a lot of days that pass where you’re just sitting there waiting as a link in the chain.
“I think if he was to go, especially for the money we’re talking about, Unai Emery would want to reinvest it somewhere, especially in the midfield and I think he should be given time to do that.”
Ramsey has struggled with injury and fitness issues so far this season that have limited him to 10 Premier League appearances, with only four of those matches seeing him named in Emery’s starting XI.
The 22-year-old’s performances last year however showed that he can play an important role in the Spaniard’s side at Villa Park when fit, as he registered 14 goal involvements in 40 appearances in all competitions.
It remains to be seen whether or not Rogers’ impending arrival changes Aston Villa’s stance on Ramsey’s future before the end of the transfer window, but it seems impossible to rule out a potential move in the final hours of the window.
