Aston Villa: Dan Bardell shares profit and sustainability admission as Rico Richards loan exit confirmed at Villa Park
We’re delighted to welcome Sky Sports journalist Dan Bardell as our exclusive Aston Villa columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the club…
Dan Bardell believes it’s important for the Aston Villa youngsters to be sent out on loan after Rico Richards has joined Stockport County.
Villa confirmed on their website on 18 January that the 20-year-old has joined the League Two club until the end of the season as he looks to help them secure promotion.
The English forward only made the switch to Villa Park in the summer from rivals West Brom after making two senior appearances during his time at the Hawthorns.
Bardell revealed that the Villans have received some big fees from loaning players out in the past, helping them to meet their profit and sustainability obligations.
Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Bardell said: “He’s highly rated. Villa have plucked a lot of players from West Brom over the last few years from their academy. This seems to be one of the higher-rated players.
“We’ll see how he gets on, you have to send these players out on loan. By in large, Villa’s loan department have got a lot right over the last few years and, actually, the loans have really aided certain player developments.
“In the cases of some of them, Villa have got pretty big fees in the grand scheme of things, which has helped with profit and sustainability rulings.

“You’ve got to trust the loan department at the moment, the players have been sent out to the right place, they’re going away and getting games and boosting their value to go out on loan again at a higher level or to be sold on.
“Villa’s development path is a fruitful one at the moment in many ways.”
