Aston Villa: Dan Bardell details what he’s been told about Kaine Kesler-Hayden ‘shock’ Villa Park loan recall
We’re delighted to welcome Sky Sports journalist Dan Bardell as our exclusive Aston Villa columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the club…
Dan Bardell has revealed that Kaine Kesler-Hayden could be set to form part of the Aston Villa first-team following his recall from a loan spell with Plymouth Argyle.
The Pilgrims announced on their website on 14 January that the 20-year-old right-back had returned to Villa after they activated a clause in his loan agreement.
Having made 27 appearances for the Championship side in the first half of the season, Argyle boss Ian Foster said on 19 January (via BBC Sport) that it was a bit of a “shock” to see the England youth international return to Villa Park.
Bardell has questioned whether Kesler-Hayden will be provided an opportunity to impress for the Villans in the second half of the campaign after they’ve previously recalled the defender from loan spells and it hasn’t led to anything.
Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Bardell said: “Villa have done this before, where they’ve recalled him back from a loan and nothing has really happened off the back of it.
“At the moment, he hasn’t had another loan move and I heard murmurs that he was going to form part of the first-team squad. I’m not sure how long he’s been back now, but Villa obviously do only have one right-back.
“I don’t know how brilliantly he did at Plymouth to have done enough to impress Emery, but he’s homegrown so he could form part of the European squad without having to be registered. Maybe that’s something that they’re looking at.

“It may be that he comes in and plays some games in Europe, perhaps forming part of the squad to give Villa another body without them having to spend money if Chambers is to go.
“He kind of takes his place and he’s a homegrown academy player, so I could see why Villa would do it. He’s a player I always thought would make it at Villa, but he’s had a strange kind of time since the Youth Cup.
“But hopefully, he can come back and make an impact, I’m just not sure it will happen.”
