Aston Villa make approach to sign Hakon Valdimarsson while third bid submitted for Middlesbrough ace Morgan Rogers

Aston Villa have made an approach to sign Elfsborg goalkeeper Hakon Valdimarsson, as well as a third bid for Middlesbrough winger Morgan Rogers, according to the Mail on Sunday.

The newspaper reported in their print edition [21 January, page 101] that, after their first two bids were turned down for Rogers, another bid was made for the player who cost Boro just £1million in the summer.

Valdimarsson, meanwhile, represents Iceland at international level and at just 22 would be a long-term option for the position, and claimed it was great to see Villa were interested in him.

A busy end to the window

After a quiet opening couple of weeks at Villa Park, certainly, in comparison to their summer transfer window, it looks like the transfer team have now kicked into gear and are looking for a busy end to the January window.

The deal for Rogers looks like one they are determined to get done, with three bids made already as Boro are understandably reluctant to let one of their key players leave, although a large profit on a deal that cost them just £1million in the summer would be a sweetener.

With Boro demanding an increased fee, Manchester City will also be pleased, as they are set to receive a sell-on fee if he moves on which could explain the Championship club’s haggling over the deal as they want to make the most possible profit.

A move for a new goalkeeper may seem strange as a result of Emi Martinez’s dominance between the sticks, but with the Argentina international now 31, long-term contingency plans are being put in place at Villa Park.
