Sky Sports journalist shares ‘most surprising’ Aston Villa Women verdict after ‘dismal’ WSL start
Aston Villa Women have climbed the WSL table in recent times after their “dismal” start, according to Sky Sports journalist Charlotte Marsh.
Carla Ward’s side are in ninth place in the league table after 10 matches as they return to action following the winter break.
Only three clubs – Brighton, West Ham and Bristol City – are below Aston Villa Women at this stage of the WSL campaign.

“Just three points separate Everton in seventh with Brighton in 10th,” Marsh wrote for Sky Sports (18 January). “Perhaps the most surprising team in that mix is Aston Villa, who had been part of last season’s chasing pack.
“Carla Ward’s side had a dismal start to the season, but three wins in the last two months have pushed them up the WSL table. One of those came against Brighton, who are still finding their feet under new coach Melissa Phillips.”

Key period
Aston Villa Women are now entering a key period of the season, and the players should be more than up for the task for many reasons.
Firstly, they will be well rested after the winter break, and should be desperate to hit the pitch and perform for their manager.
Secondly, the Midlands outfit have had a disappointing WSL campaign so far, and should be eager to climb the table as soon as possible.
League leaders Chelsea won’t be targeted, but there are several clubs just ahead in the table that Aston Villa Women can move beyond with a good run of form.
Three wins and seven losses from 10 matches simply isn’t good enough, and Ward will need to inspire her players in the coming weeks.
The Midlands club are involved in the first game back when they take on Leicester City at the Pirelli Stadium on Friday (19 January).
In other Aston Villa Women news, Ward has shared an “absolutely imperative” January transfer admission.
