Dan Bardell would be “surprised” if Aston Villa were to make a move to sign Peterborough United sensation Ronnie Edwards in the January transfer window.
Reports emerged from the Mail on Sunday on 7 January that Villa had expressed an interest in the 20-year-old and had joined the race for his signature alongside Premier League rivals West Ham United and Crystal Palace this month.
It’s understood that Palace have already seen three separate bids rejected for the defender’s services and Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony has repeatedly insisted that he is not for sale, with the centre-back currently valued at £10million by the League One club.
Bardell doesn’t believe Edwards is the type of signing the Villans would be looking to make and hasn’t specifically heard anything along those lines either.
Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Bardell said: “He’s a player who feels like he’s been around forever. I’m sure people have been signing him on Football Manager for the last five years, that’s why I know who he is.
“I just think he’s probably not the type of player Villa would be signing. Villa, almost when they’re signing players from academies and players from lower down the leagues, they’re signing players who are kind of before the stage that he’s at in his development.
“They picked up a lot of players from West Brom, for example, at 16, 17, players that haven’t actually played any professional games, whereas Ronnie Edwards has played men’s football.
“I think when Villa are signing younger players, they’re kind of operating in that market, rather than the market that Edwards is in.
“That’s not one I’ve heard about and I’d be surprised if they did get someone in like that.”
