Dan Bardell reacts to reports linking Aston Villa with Jonathan David in January

We’re delighted to welcome Sky Sports journalist Dan Bardell as our exclusive Aston Villa columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the club…

Dan Bardell doesn’t believe Aston Villa will make a move to sign Lille forward Jonathan David in the January transfer window.

It comes after news outlet FootballTransfers reported on its website on 8 January that Villa and Manchester United are “very interested” in signing the Canadian international this month.

It added that the 24-year-old has made it clear that he wants to move on from the Ligue 1 club, with the Premier League sides monitoring his situation.

Bardell doesn’t believe the Villans will look to bring in another forward during this transfer window unless Jhon Duran decides to move on from Villa Park.

Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Bardell said: “Villa aren’t going to be dropping big money on a striker. If Duran was to go, they may bring in someone that they know will be coming in as backup and will know they’re backup.

“A player of Jonathan David’s stature and calibre, he’s not going to be someone that Villa are interested in because he knows – and the footballing world knows – Unai Emery loves Ollie Watkins and he’s just signed a new five-year contract.

“Watkins is one of the top scorers and top assisters in the Premier League, and he’s playing, so that’s not an area where Villa will look be looking to spend money on.

“There’s a few areas you can look at and say Villa are a little bit short, but they are not going to drop big money on a striker, it’s just not going to happen.”
