Ex-Aston Villa scout slams ‘money-making gimmick’ as ‘ridiculous’ development emerges

Villa News is delighted to welcome aboard our brilliant new columnist Bryan King, the former goalkeeper who spent over 10 years as a scout at Aston Villa and 28 years in total in first-team scouting roles. Bryan also spent six years on Tottenham’s recruitment team and eight years scouting at Everton…

Ex-Aston Villa scout Bryan King has labelled the club’s reported new crest as a “money-making gimmick” and “ridiculous”.

Villa are reportedly set to have a new crest for 2024, which would see a return to the old style lion with “Aston Villa” written underneath and 1874 – the year of the club’s formation – above that.

Ex-Villa striker Stan Collymore posted a picture of the leaked badge on his X account (3 January” and said it was “not for me”.

King is in a similar boat and does not see why Villa are opting to change badge. The club had only changed to their new design from the 2023-24 season (official website).

“Why would you want to change it? New shirts etcetera, another way to make money?” King told Villa News.

“This happened at Everton while I was there, Nike came in and took the Latin writing off and just changed the shape, within a season it was gone they wouldn’t have it the supporters.

“Why should there not be (a sense of pride) it’s a great tradition and Aston Villa are a football club with great tradition.

“I think it’s a money-making gimmick, no need to change the crest but who are we to argue with the owners or board of directors who are going to change it?

“I think it’s ridiculous, even Spurs when they changed stadiums they removed the Cockerill.”

While another change of badge might be met with some rolled eyes among supporters, fans are delighted with what’s happening on the pitch.

They sit second in the Premier League after 20 matches, just three points adrift of leaders Liverpool.

A 1-0 victory over Middlesbrough on Saturday (6 January) also saw the club reach the fourth round of the FA Cup.
