Aston Villa transfer news as £8.7m bid for Verona ace Cyril Ngonge ‘verbally accepted’

Aston Villa have had an £8.7million bid for Hellas Verona winger Cyril Ngonge “verbally accepted” by the Serie A club, according to Tuttomercatoweb.

The online news outline reported (2 January) that the two clubs have reached an agreement over the Belgian winger, who only made the switch to the Serie A side in January 2023 on a free transfer.

However, the Premier League high-flyers are facing reported competition for the 23-year-old’s signature with Fiorentina said to be interested.

Tuttomercatoweb added that Ngonge is enjoying life in Serie A and may prefer to remain in Italy rather than explore a move to England.

Tricky one

With Unai Emery leading an unlikely tilt for the Premier League title this season it would be great to see him backed in January with reinforcements to help keep the momentum now we are into the new year.

Ngonge represents an interesting option, he has five goals in 17 games this season, and would provide competition for the likes of Leon Bailey and Moussa Diaby and add bodies with Villa still in the Europa Conference League.

However, even if the report is true that a deal has been struck it looks as though the player will need some convincing to make the move to England as he is seemingly enjoying life in Italy and has options there by the looks of things.

If he is a player Emery really wants then Villa will do what they can to convince him to join but, by the same token, every signing is crucial now and the club must make sure that anyone who joins really wants to be there because the fight is more than on for the title.
