Aston Villa must find improved loan move for Lamare Bogarde as deal terminated

Aston Villa will be looking to find a new loan move for 18-year-old Lamare Bogarde after deciding to cut his Bristol Rovers loan short, and they must now find a deal that suits him better.

Bogarde made 18 appearances for the League One club but had not made a league appearance since November, with game time now hard to come by under Matt Taylor’s management, pushing Villa to recall him according to The Athletic [3 January].

It will now be imperative to the midfielder’s development that Villa can find him a move where he will be afforded regular football in a system that suits his style.

Bristol Rovers currently sit in tenth place in League One, and with Bogarde having made 14 appearances at this level, it is clear that he is well-suited to the division at this stage of his career.

A step to a team slightly lower down the league may provide him with additional playing time and more of a starring role in the team.

This is just his first season in senior football, so adapting to the physicality of the men’s game, particularly at this level, will be crucial to his development.

The majority of his spell with Bristol Rovers was spent playing in midfield, alternating between a holding role in front of the back line and a central midfield role to lend his physicality to the side, with his quality on the ball also standing out.

Rovers do not typically dominate the possession in their games, with their last three games seeing them take 37 per cent, 48 per cent, and 37 per cent respectively. This means Bogarde’s role has been more of a destroyer than a playmaker.

Able to play both in midfield and at centre-back, he is comfortable on the ball and in possession, which can lend an element of calmness to the side, but standing at 6ft1 [Transfermarkt] he is enough of a presence to hold his own against the physical nature of the league.

Perhaps a loan move to a club that prefers more of the ball in possession would be a better move for him, to gain experience controlling the game and keeping the play in the middle and at the back to ready him for a step up through the divisions in the future.

It will be interesting to see where Villa see his long-term future, both in terms of his position and style of play, and his next loan move will be telling as to how they view their young talent.
