Aston Villa: 89% ace may force Unai Emery into transfer U-turn with display v Manchester United
Leander Dendoncker may have forced Unai Emery into a transfer U-turn after his performance for Aston Villa in the 3-2 defeat to Manchester United on 26 December.
Dendoncker scored Villa’s second goal of the game from a corner, but his all-round game was more impressive than he had shown in recent weeks, as he looked to prove he belongs in and around the first team.
This comes after it was reported that Emery had not been convinced by the Beglian’s performances [Jacob Tanswell, 17 December], with suggestions that he could be sold in the January transfer window.

With transfer rumours swirling and plenty of uncertainty around his future at Villa Park, the Belgian midfielder needed to impress with a big display against United, and his key role in midfield may have convinced many he can play a role in this team.
His 89 per cent passing accuracy proved he was capable of keeping possession in the middle against a team that had opted to press high while winning five out of his six attempted ground duels and two of his three aerial duels proving how he dominated his individual battles. [Sofascore]
Dendoncker also made two interceptions and four tackles sitting in front of the defence, attempting to provide cover from the threat posed by Bruno Fernandes who acted as the main creator in the United midfield.
Despite the ultimate result, it would be harsh to point at the Beglian for any of the three goals Villa conceded, with the high line to blame for their undoing as Erik ten Hag’s team frequently skipped the midfield with balls in behind the defensive line.

With a goal and an impressive overall display, Dendoncker may now be on the path to redemption under Emery. He will still have plenty to prove if he wants to make the starting place his own, but a dominant performance at Old Trafford is always a strong start.
In other Aston Villa news, a 16-year-old academy star is already justifying his transfer fee.
