Aston Villa Women ace Rachel Corsie hits out at ‘absolutely outrageous’ claims

Aston Villa Women ace Rachel Corsie has hit out at claims about Scotland’s integrity ahead of their clash with England.

The Scotland captain will line out for her nation when they meet England in a Women’s Nations League match on Tuesday (5 December).

The tournament offers a route for Team GB to qualify for the Olympics, with an England win set to benefit Scottish players wanting to make the squad next summer as they are the nominated side for Paris 2024.

“A lot of people outside have spoken about it, and truthfully I think it is so disrespectful,” said Corsie, as quoted by the Guardian (4 December).

“To have played for my country for as many years as I have – to know the girls that sit in there, the ones that want to be here, the ones who can’t be here through injury – I think it is absolutely outrageous to question anyone’s integrity and I think it is a huge insult to us.”

Insulting

Aston Villa Women ace Corsie was clearly outraged at the questions regarding Scotland’s integrity ahead of the clash with the Lionesses at Hampden Park.

The claims were perhaps made given the current situation regarding the two nations, with Scotland having already been relegated from Nations League A before their final match, while England need to win, along with overturning an inferior goal difference if the Netherlands beat Belgium in their final match.

A win for Sarina Wiegman’s side could boost Team GB’s Olympic hopes in France next summer, with the Lionesses manager set to coach the squad.

But she will be well aware of the history between the two nations, and subsequently the cold reception that England will get as Scotland look to clinch a famous victory.

The claims will simply give the Scotland players and fans extra motivation to want to win the highly-anticipated clash under the lights in Glasgow.
