Pau Torres rightly handed Team of the Week place after 100% display in Aston Villa 2-1 win v Tottenham

Aston Villa produced a superb display in all areas to clinch a fine 2-1 victory away to Tottenham on Sunday (26 November).

Unai Emery’s men needed to fight back from 1-0 down after Giovani Lo Celso scored an early opener for the hosts in the North London clash.

And that fight back was kickstarted by a brilliant header from Pau Torres in first-half injury time, with Ollie Watkins netting Villa’s winner just after the hour mark.

It was a great team display from the visitors, but Torres certainly stood out thanks to his very well-taken goal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The centre-back did, however, also shine in various other areas, with the summer signing winning six of his seven duels and completing 84% of his passes [Sofascore].

Moreover, the defender made two clearances, one tackle and one interception, as well as completing both of his attempted dribbles (100%). The centre-back also blocked one shot and was not dribbled past throughout his 90 minutes on the pitch.

The impressive all-round display earned plenty of plaudits, not least from Newcastle United and England legend Alan Shearer.

The pundit was hugely impressed by the Villa defender, naming Torres in his Premier League Team of the Week, telling the official Premier League website (28 November): “Good all-round performance along with an important goal.”

The Spaniard has slotted into Emery’s system perfectly, with his ability to keep possession at the back before starting attacks key to the club’s success on the pitch this season.

His superb defensive traits are also very much appreciated at Villa Park, with Torres dramatically rescuing his side in North London thanks to his clearance off the line [Sofascore].

In other Aston Villa news, Emery may be left with no choice but to axe one player after his 0% shocker against Tottenham.
