Morgan Sanson finished at Aston Villa, ‘it’s done’ as transfer agreement in place

We’re delighted to welcome former Aston Villa full-back Alan Hutton as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Villa Park…

Alan Hutton believes Morgan Sanson is “done” at Aston Villa despite performing well while on loan at OGC Nice this season.

Sanson, 29, joined the Ligue 1 club on loan in the summer. It was confirmed by them in July that they also have the option to sign the midfielder permanently at the end of this season.

While on loan at Nice, Sanson has played in every Ligue 1 match with the Côte d’Azur club currently second in the table behind only Paris Saint-Germain. Nice are also the only unbeaten team in the French top flight this season.

Hutton, however, doesn’t think Sanson has a future at Villa Park and he’s surprised he’s still even on the books at the Premier League club due to how much he’s struggled in the West Midlands.

Speaking to Villa News, Hutton said: “I don’t watch the French league so I don’t exactly know what his performances have been like but I genuinely thought that his Aston Villa career was over a while ago.

It’s just not worked out. From day one, it’s not happened for him.

It’s been difficult for him and when he has had game time, it’s probably not been the way he’s wanted. It’s very difficult to shine when you’re not coming in straight away.

If there’s an opportunity for Nice to sign him permanently and he’s playing at a high standard every week, then I think they would take up that option. But for me, I think the Aston Villa side of it is done.”

Sanson signed for Aston Villa from Marseille in 2021.

He struggled to play regularly for the Villans and in January, he was sent on a half-season loan to Strasbourg in Ligue 1 before Nice landed him on a loan-to-buy basis in July.
