John McGinn has night to forget for Scotland v England, Aston Villa ace helpless in 3-1 defeat
Aston Villa star John McGinn was helpless as his nation Scotland fell to a 3-1 international friendly defeat to England.
The midfielder played 82 minutes of the clash at Hampden Park on Tuesday (12 September) before being replaced by Bologna’s Lewis Ferguson.
But he was largely non-existent as the likes of Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice dominated the midfield at Hampden Park.

McGinn, usually a battler on the pitch with plenty of energy, saw very little of the ball against the Three Lions, with only Che Adams (10) having fewer touches than McGinn (25) when it came to Scotland’s starters, as per SofaScore.
The Aston Villa man attempted just 20 passes on the night, completing 15, and was not accurate with his one attempted cross.
Moreover, he didn’t register a single ground duel, and did not win his only attempted aerial duel, while he lost possession of the ball on six occasions.
In an attacking sense, he had zero shots on target and one off it, while defensively he did not register any clearances, interceptions or tackles.

The disappointing display resulted in Sky Sports (12 September) handing McGinn a match rating of 5/10, commenting: “A peripheral figure for much of the game. Produced the pass to release Robertson in the build-up to Scotland’s goal, then missed a chance to equalise when he headed over from the Liverpool full-back’s cross soon afterwards.”
BBC Sport (12 September) also handed the midfielder a disappointing 4.61/10 rating for his performance under the lights in Glasgow.
In other Aston Villa news, one Villa man has surely earned his first Premier League start after what he did against Liverpool earlier this month.
