Aston Villa hijack of Chelsea transfer for Tyler Adams discussed as first stage of medical completed

We’re delighted to welcome Sky Sports journalist Dan Bardell as our exclusive Aston Villa columnist each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the club…

Tyler Adams is unlikely to move to Aston Villa as the club are not in the market for any more defenders or midfielders, according to Dan Bardell.

The Leeds United star has been linked to a move with Villa during the summer, with The Athletic reporting (18 July) that the USMNT midfielder has a £20million relegation release clause in his contract.

Villa themselves have made an upgrade in midfield already this summer with the free signing of Youri Tielemans following the expiration of his Leicester City contract. However, as recently as 2 August, the Daily Mail claimed the Villans were willing to pay the release clause for Adams.

Meanwhile, Chelsea have emerged as the frontrunner to sign the former RB Leipzig man, with the Daily Mail claiming (5 August) that the Blues are ready to activate his release clause and Fabrizio Romano adding on Thursday (10 August) that the American has already done part of his medical with the London club.

However, Bardell has mooted claims that Villa want to sign him, saying that due to the window nearly being closed Unai Emery’s side “are done” with incoming unless something “interesting” appears.

Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Bardell said: “They’re saying Chelsea are more likely to explore a move. I think Villa are done in terms of incomings unless an interesting attacking player comes up. I don’t think you can see Villa doing anything else.

“We’re going up towards the end of the window so I don’t think we’ll see Villa make a move for Tyler Adams. He was a player that was on their radar but Emery has players that can play multiple positions now.

“I think he’s a good player and I like players that come through that Red Bull model and I think he was actually one of the leading lights for Leeds, albeit he’s going back from injury. He missed the end of the season.

But I don’t think Villa will bring in another defender or midfielder.
