Jamie Carragher: Aston Villa have completed 'unbelievable' signing
Jamie Carragher has described Pau Torres as an “unbelievable signing” for Aston Villa as Unai Emery continues to strengthen his squad this summer.
The Spain international joined the Villans from Villarreal on 12 July for a reported £33million to add to the side’s defensive options.
Speaking on The Overlap Youtube Show on 8 August, Carragher praised the signing of the 26-year-old as Villa look to continue pushing forward after qualifying for the Europa Conference League.
“He [Emery] has come in halfway through the season, he’s embedded what he wants,” said Carragher when previewing Villa’s upcoming campaign.
“You’ve just added three or four players. The guy you’ve mentioned there, who used to be sporting director at Sevilla, has got an unbelievable reputation in terms of bringing players in.
“I think the defender [Torres] you’ve brought in from Villarreal, I think he’s an unbelievable signing for Aston Villa.”
Statement
There’s no doubt that the signing of Torres has been a real statement after he’s been linked with a number of Europe’s biggest clubs in recent years.
The defender has made 23 appearances for Spain and played a crucial role in helping Villarreal win the Europa League in 2021 while Emery was in charge.
The Spanish manager will have definitely been a major factor in Torres making the move to Villa Park, but he will certainly have been impressed by the club’s ambition.
The fact Carragher is bringing up the signing shows that it will have raised some eyebrows around the Premier League and big things will be expected of the club in the upcoming campaign.
With Emery at the helm, Villa are in an excellent position to continue pushing forward and Torres – as well as the other exciting additions that have come through the door – will be key to any success they may achieve.
In other Aston Villa news, a midfielder could be heading out of Villa Park following PL interest in signing him.
