Unai Emery to sanction more Aston Villa exits after club-record development

We’re delighted to welcome former Aston Villa full-back Alan Hutton as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Villa Park…

Alan Hutton predicts Aston Villa to sell more players in order to balance out the squad ahead of the 2023/24 Premier League season.

Unai Emery has so far added Youri Tielemans, Pau Torres and Moussa Diaby to his squad with the latter arriving in a club-record £51.9million deal last week [The Guardian].

Marvelous Nakamba, Jed Steer and Ashley Young are the only senior players to leave, however, since the end of last season.

Hutton believes Unai Emery will want to continue re-shaping the squad he inherited from Steven Gerrard midway through last season with the Villans set to play in the Conference League next term.

“Yes, possibly. That’s what happens,” Hutton told Villa News when asked if exits mean more arrivals are to be expected.

“You look at your squad, you identify where you need to strengthen. But you can’t work with too many players.

You need a certain number who the manager will want to work with on a daily basis.

To get the number of players in that you want to work with, you have to move some out.

I’d imagine this process will go on all the way up until the end of the window.”

Villa kick off their Premier League campaign against Newcastle United on 12 August but before then, they have friendly games against Brentford, Lazio and Valencia where Emery will continue to assess his options.

In other Aston Villa news, a top European club has offered their “marquee” signing to the Villans.
