Calum Chambers to exit Aston Villa as mega-money transfer news emerges from Villa Park

We’re delighted to welcome former Aston Villa full-back Alan Hutton as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Villa Park…

Calum Chambers could be on the chopping block at Aston Villa this summer as Unai Emery aims to add to his defence, according to Alan Hutton.

On Wednesday (28 June), talkSPORT reported that Villa are pushing to sign Villarreal and Spain centre-back Pau Torres with the West Midlands club “in the box seat to land the defender in a £55million deal”.

Villa already have Tyrone Mings, Ezri Konsa and Diego Carlos as centre-back options ahead of 28-year-old Chambers.

Last season, the former Arsenal and Southampton defender played just 14 times in the Premier League with 12 of those appearances being as a substitute.

Hutton can see Chambers moving on if Torres is brought down as it’ll only bump the three-times England international further down Emery’s pecking order.

When asked by Villa News if Chambers’ spell at B6 is coming to an end, Hutton said: “Possibly. But the big question is, ‘where does he go?’.

“For a lot of his career, he’s been a squad player, so is he happy to continue that and when called upon he can give his best? We’ll have to see because Aston Villa are looking at defensive reinforcements.

Do Villa have to get rid of one or two to bring some in? Possibly. It might kind of fall down to that.

Chambers is a player you can call upon when you need to but I don’t think he’s ever going to be that guy who comes in and play week in and week out.”

Chambers joined Villa in January 2022 but has only played 28 times in all competitions since.

In other Aston Villa news, Monchi is already said to be in talks behind the scenes with this Villa Park man.
