Hannah Hampton to struggle for game time despite ‘incredible’ Aston Villa Women form if transfer exit sealed – Sky Sports journalist

We’re delighted to welcome Sky Sports journalist Dan Bardell as our exclusive Aston Villa columnist each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the club…

Dan Bardell believes Hannah Hampton may struggle for game time if she seals a transfer away from Aston Villa Women to one of the WSL’s top four clubs this summer.

BBC Sport journalist Emma Sanders recently shared (8 June) that the 22-year-old has turned down a contract extension at Aston Villa amid interest from the likes of Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea, as well as two Spanish sides.

After a spell out of the England set-up, the Villa shot-stopper was named in Sarina Wingman’s 23-player squad for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, alongside fellow Villan’s Jordan Nobbs and Rachel Daly.

Her impressive form for Carla Ward’s side resulted in five clean sheets across the season, conceding 28 goals from 15 outings.

Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Bardell said: “Hampton is a very, very good goalkeeper, and her distribution is absolutely incredible, it’s probably the best distribution from a goalkeeper in the WSL and I think that is what sets her apart.

“She is young but has played a lot of games for somebody her age in that position, so I am pretty certain she will go on and play for England as the number one goalkeeper in the future.

“She is a really talented player and does everything you want a modern goalkeeper to do.

“Her destination will depend on where she has offers, but Villa are heading in the right direction, they have a really settled group and a great manager, so I don’t really understand why she would want to leave, whereas if she went to Manchester United or Manchester City, there are already goalkeepers there.

“Mary Earps, England’s number one, is at Manchester United, so she is unlikely to get regular game time there, so it will be interesting to see where she goes.”
