Aston Villa: ‘Scary’ Jacob Ramsey verdict emerges as attacker left disappointed by decision
We’re delighted to welcome former Aston Villa full-back Alan Hutton as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Villa Park…
Alan Hutton admits it’s a “scary thought” that Jacob Ramsey can improve after the Aston Villa attacker ended the Premier League season on a high.
Ramsey, 22, scored two goals and supplied two assists in his final four appearances of the campaign to help Villa finish seventh and qualify for the Europa Conference League.
Despite ending the campaign with six goals and eight assists in all competitions, Gareth Southgate didn’t select the young attacker in his England squad for the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers.

England play against Malta on 16 June and North Macedonia three days later but despite the quality of the opponents, Southgate has gone for an experienced squad, in which Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze is the only uncapped player.
Tyrone Mings was, however, back in the squad but Hutton believes that while Ramsey may be a bit gutted to miss out on this England team, there’ll be plenty of opportunities for him in the future due to how much potential he still has to unlock.
When asked if Ramsey can feel hard done by, Hutton told Villa News: “Possibly. He’s had an outstanding season, he’s gone from strength to strength and it looks like the manager trusts him with everything that he does.

“He’s playing at the top of his game and the thing is, it does look as though there’s room for improvement. That’s a scary thought, that you can get better.
“He’ll be really happy with his season and yes, slightly disappointed [to not get in the England squad] but he’s young and he’ll get over that.
“It will come – it’s a matter of time.
“He’s that good and as I say, he can only get better. I don’t think he’ll be too down about it at this moment in time.”
In other Aston Villa news, the club could be set to receive an “unbelievable” cash prize.
