Aston Villa starlet Sil Swinkels may be ruled out for nine months, ACL retear possibility – Injury Expert

We’re delighted to welcome injury expert Dr Rajpal Brar as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the injury situation at Aston Villa...

Aston Villa youngster Sil Swinkels could be out for up to nine months after he admitted that he’ll be out of action for a while, claims Dr Rajpal Brar.

The injury expert made the assessment based on the nature of the injury and the fact that the Villa sensation is just 19-year-old.

Given that he’s torn his ACL, the best-case scenario for the defender is seven months, however, his age poses another risk of potentially retearing the ligament.

Brar, a doctor in physical therapy and a sports scientist, told Villa News exclusively about the consequences of rushing someone back after this injury. He said, “The typical return timeline in elite football is around seven to nine months.

However, there’s good evidence in footballers under 25 years old showing that returning prior to nine months leads to a seven-fold increase in risk for retearing the ACL.

“I imagine Aston Villa will be quite careful.”

Swinkels took to Instagram to relay the news to people that he will not be back any time soon and that it’s going to be a long road ahead before he recovers.

The 19-year-old will undergo surgery after sustaining the same injury Wesley did after he was at the wrong end of a challenge from Ben Mee.

The defender featured in eight Premier League 2 games for the Villans this season, making the starting eleven 33 per cent of the time.

In other Aston Villa news, a senior player may never feature for the club again after recent news emerges, making a summer exit very much on the cards.
