Aston Villa: Tyrone Mings call-up to England squad still possible despite ‘strange’ Gareth Southgate move – pundit

We’re delighted to welcome former Aston Villa full-back Alan Hutton as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Villa Park

Tyrone Mings can re-establish himself back in the England squad if he continues his fine form at Aston Villa, according to Alan Hutton.

Mings, 30, last played for the Three Lions in March last year when he scored in a 3-0 friendly win over Ivory Coast.

He’s failed to make any of Gareth Southgate’s squad since, including the most recent side, who’ll be playing against Italy and Ukraine in Euro 2024 qualifiers in the coming days.

Manchester United outcast Harry Maguire, however, did make Southgate’s squad despite starting just five Premier League games all season and playing just one minute out of his club’s last four top-flight outings.

Hutton doesn’t understand what 30-year-old Maguire has done to merit his inclusion and he’d hope that Mings may only be an injury away from being called up by Southgate in the near future.

Speaking to Villa News, Hutton said: “Mings plays week in, week out. He played really well at the weekend [in the 3-0 win against Bournemouth].

You always kind of question certain decisions [made by Southgate] and it doesn’t matter if you’re playing for Manchester United or not, or captain or not, if you’re not playing every week, how can you then go away with the national team?

It’s kind of a strange one.

Mings will feel disappointed but I think he’s one who works really hard and if he continues the form he’s in, maybe an injury will make him an option.”

Mings has played 26 times for Aston Villa in all competitions this season.

In other Aston Villa news, players could now be fighting for their futures at Villa Park with a mid-table finish all but secured.
