Unai Emery reveals behind-closed-doors conversation with Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens during Aston Villa appointment

In his very first interview as Aston Villa manager, Unai Emery has opened up on the conversations between himself, Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens.

Unai Emery is currently enjoying his first week as Aston Villa manager and is preparing for his very first game in the dugout when Manchester United visit Villa Park on Sunday afternoon.

The Spaniard gave up his role at Villarreal to join the Villans, and he has now revealed the conversations with Sawiris and Edens that convinced him to take the job.

Speaking during his very first interview with Villa TV, Emery said: “They were so clear. The decision was difficult but the message was clear for me.

“We want your experience, we want your capacity to achieve some objective in your career as a coach and your experiences in the Premier League gave you more experiences for the present now. We want to improve and create a new future and go up.”

“It was the key and those conversations were really big to convince and trust in this way. It is going to be difficult but I am excited.”

A club effort

Aston Villa have started a new era under Emery, and after the struggles of Steven Gerrard, the club is now fully aware of how difficult it will be to achieve Villa’s lofty ambitions.

But if Villa are going to become a team capable of consistently entering European competitions, then they’ve got a suitable manager in place.

But Emery alone isn’t enough to transform the club. Sawiris and Edens will have to back him through thick and thin and help him construct a squad capable of implementing his style of play.

It’ll likely mean many tough decisions when it comes to investing and selling players, but Emery has to be the focal point of Villa’s rebuild.

Fans will also have a role to play as they’ll need to back Emery and his squad and be patient when it comes to results and performances. He’ll certainly need the World Cup break and beyond to truly drill his tactics into the squad, and only then should he be judged for the team’s performances.

But overall, it’s an incredibly exciting time for Villa and it truly does feel like the start of a new era.
