Kris Boyd slams Aston Villa medical staff for not taking Emiliano Martinez off the pitch sooner v Newcastle

Emiliano Martinez took a knee to his head in the Aston Villa v Newcastle game which ended 4-0 in favour of the latter on Saturday.

The Villa goalkeeper even received treatment for five minutes but was then given the green signal to continue playing.

However, he was then taken off after 10-15 minutes because it was deemed that it’s not safe for him to carry on as it would be a big risk.

Discussing this on Sky Sports, via Football Daily, Kris Boyd said, “I’m no medical expert but I could see from there that it was serious. It was in the side of the head and knee full force from Tyrone Mings.

“You could see that Martinez was struggling. Why the medical staff don’t put their foot down and take him off this field?

“It was an absolute disgrace.”

Shocking

With all the signs and data and football. It’s ridiculous that the decision to bring him off wasn’t made any sooner.

There is so much awareness about concussions and their long-term effects of it and it could have been extremely detrimental, not just for his career but for his entire life.

We’re relieved that the extent of Martinez’s injury is not that severe and we hope that he is fine in no time.

However, this should generally raise awareness about what referees can and cannot allow as these things cannot go on regardless of how important the matches are.

A person’s life and career are more important than the result of a football match and even if it’s the final of the world cup or the Champions League, nothing should be put ahead of them.

Boyd is absolutely spot-on and we encourage and hope that more pundits come out and speak up about it as they are ex-professionals and are aware of these kinds of issues.
