John Terry: Aston Villa should return to ‘intimidating’ tactic at Villa Park
John Terry spent three years at Aston Villa as an assistant manager and believes that a tactic he used to use at Chelsea worked well at Villa Park.
Aston Villa sit just three points off the relegation zone after a terrible start to the season under Steven Gerrard. But with Unai Emery now announced as the new manager, the Villans will want to quickly climb up the standings.
Former Villa player and assistant Terry believes that the Spaniard should utilise an “intimidating” tactic used to employ at both Chelsea and Aston Villa.
After a Twitter user asked whether Villa should start home games attacking the Holte End, Terry took to the replies to deliver his verdict.
“100%. Intimidating for the opposition as you send them towards the Holte End before kick off,” Terry replied via Twitter.
“Jose always got me to do it when he arrived at Chelsea, and the amount of players from the opposition used to say to me how much they hated it. “
Every little helps
Little things like this can make a huge difference. Watching on TV or from the stands sometimes plays down the impact of the atmosphere on the players, but Terry has first-hand experience from the pitch.
Having been part of a Chelsea side that made Stamford Bridge an impenetrable fortress under Mourinho, Terry knows every trick of the trade when it comes to maximising home advantage.

Terry clearly brought that expertise to Villa and Emery could definitely use that as he looks to improve Villa’s home form.
Villa’s form at home this season has admittedly been quite good – it’s during away matches that the side tends to struggle. But still, there’s always room for improvement and if Villa are going to achieve their lofty ambitions under Emery then they’ll need every little advantage they can get.
Villa Park is bound to be absolutely bouncing for Emery’s first home game against Manchester United on 6 November, and he’ll need help from the fans if the side are going to start his tenure with three points.
