Ally McCoist unconvinced by Unai Emery appointment at Aston Villa

TalkSport pundit Ally McCoist isn’t convinced by the Aston Villa appointment of Unai Emery even though he has a good record.

Former Arsenal boss Emery, who had been in charge of Spanish club Villarreal, will take over at Villa Park on 1 November once work permit issues are ironed out.

McCoist admitted that the appointment doesn’t “excite” him or Aston Villa fans despite the Spainards solid winning record at clubs, including a Europa League title.

“He’s a good manager and he’s a good coach but it just doesn’t excite me,” said McCoist speaking to TalkSPORT.

“I don’t know why I’m saying that, it might be a little bit unfair, it is unfair because he has a great record, he can clearly manage and he can certainly coach.

“But I’m just not sure it excites me for the Villa fans.”

Aston Villa

Interesting take.

It’s an interesting take from McCoist, Emery is a top-level coach and brings with him a European pedigree that hasn’t been seen at the Villans for years.

He’s taken Villarreal to a UEFA Champions League semi-final last season and won the UEFA Europa League the campaign before.

If that’s not enough credentials to get you excited I’m not sure what is, Emery could prove to be an extremely shrewd bit of business from Villa.

Emery also took Arsenal to a Europa League final only to be beaten by Chelsea, his last spell in England may be the only question mark above his head.

If anything the appointment shows Aston Villa’s ambition as a club and shows their desire to make a mark in Europe once again.

A complete reset is needed after Steven Gerrard and Emery can provide this, he may need a little time to settle but he can promise big things.
