Ruben Amorim will not take over as Aston Villa manager – reliable journalist
Ruben Amorim will not be the next Aston Villa manager after deciding to commit to the project at Sporting CP, according to journalist Pedro Sepulveda.
The Villans finally sacked Steven Gerrard in midweek following a 3-0 defeat to Fulham, and Amorim was among the favourites to replace him as the board looked to make a swift appointment.
The club had already been turned down by Mauricio Pochettino and Thomas Tuchel, but now it seems as though the Portuguese boss has also opted against a move to the Midlands with the reliable Sepulveda making an announcement on his personal Twitter account.
“Rúben Amorim will not leave @Sporting_CP to train @AVFCOfficial,” he said.
“The 37-year-old coach is focused on achieving the goals set at Sporting. As of today [Saturday 22 October], neither the Alvalade club nor Rúben Amorim’s agent have received any contact from Aston Villa.”
Blow
It seems that Villa may not be as exciting a prospect as many believed, with the top coaches being linked to the role all turning it down and quickly too.
Pochettino and Tuchel were always seen as long shots and were highly unlikely to join, but Amorim should have been an attainable target.
The manager has made a name for himself in Europe and is playing European football this season though, while Villa are likely to spend the rest of the season battling against relegation, so it makes sense that he would turn it down.
Now it seems as though the club will have to go some way down their shortlist to bring someone in, and fans are unlikely to see a big name step up to the plate to steer the ship any time soon.
Now we need to keep working hard after the 4-0 win over Brentford on Sunday afternoon to claim a hard-fought three points, but the board must work quickly to ensure someone comes in quickly.
