Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz available for Brentford game after red card revoked

Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz is available for the Brentford game on Sunday afternoon after having his red card against Fulham revoked.

Luiz was shown a straight red card after being judged to have headbutted Fulham forward Aleksandar Mitrovic by the video assistant referee.

It’s good news for Villa who will need all the help they can get after manager Steven Gerrard was sacked on Thursday evening.

In a statement, an FA spokesperson said: “Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz will be available for their next game after a claim of wrongful dismissal was upheld by an independent Regulatory Commission today [Friday].”

Villa currently sits in a dismal 17th place in the Premier League table and will be hoping for a change in fortunes against Brentford on Sunday.

Staying put?

The 24-year-old seemed destined to become a free agent next summer, nevertheless, he signed a new deal in recent weeks much to the surprise of many.

Gerrard’s departure may affect his decision to stay at Aston Villa and may tempt Arsenal to come back with a new and improved bid in January.

Although, by putting pen to paper the Brazilian has seemed to end all rumours of him leaving the club any time soon.

His contract had been due to expire at the end of next season and his renewal is a huge boost for the Villans who lack prowess in his position.

The signing of Boubacar Kamara had offered Luiz some competition this campaign but the midfielder suffered a brutal knee injury which has kept him on the sidelines indefinitely.

It’s unclear whether a new Villa manager will favour Luiz and opt to play him in their first XI, he’s still a solid player so it wouldn’t be surprising if they did.
