Aston Villa must be wary of Financial Fair Play in new manager hunt – report

Aston Villa might have to be cautious of Financial Fair Play as they search for a new manager, according to Sky Sports Transfer Centre (21 October, 11:49am).

The Villans chose to sack Steven Gerrard on Thursday (20 October) after they were thoroughly beaten 3-0 by Fulham at Craven Cottage thanks to goals from Harrison Reed, Aleksandr Mitrovic and Tyrone Mings, who put through his own goal.

The club made a number of big transfer moves over the summer and found themselves needing to sell before buying at the end of the window and that financial strictness is still in play as they search for a new manager.

“Villa need to be mindful of costs, and ensure they adhere to FFP rules,” the Sky Sports Transfer Centre said. “The recruitment process started last night, and the decision about who will take charge will be taken as a group – with sporting director Johan Lange, CEO Christian Purslow and the owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens.”

About time

From the moment Gerrard was appointed at Aston Villa, there was trepidation about whether he could handle such a big job so early into his managerial career.

He had done well north of the border at Rangers previously but there is very little competition in Scotland so it was always going to be hard for him to fail.

All of those big summer signings needed to fire from the off to keep Gerrard’s job even remotely safe and the swift year-ending injury to Diego Carlos really set the tone for things to come.

Boubacar Kamara has now joined him on the long-term injury list but the former England captain did not help himself at times either.

He was stubborn in not playing Cameron Archer and other academy talents who deserved a chance and his wavering tactics were also a complete mess that nobody could understand, not even his own players.

In other Aston Villa news, it could soon be time for this African sensation to come back into the fold to try and turn around the poor form.
