Alan Hutton: Tyrone Mings must go back to basics for Aston Villa
We’re delighted to welcome former Aston Villa full-back Alan Hutton as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Villa Park.
Alan Hutton feels Tyrone Mings must get back to basics for Aston Villa after his mistake against Chelsea and suggests he has the attributes to be a top defender.
Mings badly mistimed a header against Graham Potter’s side to gift Mason Mount an opening goal for Chelsea in Villa’s 2-0 home defeat, and it didn’t get better with an own-goal in the heavy loss at Fulham.
Hutton feels his form has picked up this season and that lapses in concentration are letting Mings down so far in the 2022/23 campaign.

“I’d be surprised if he was removed from the side, I think his form has picked up,” Hutton exclusively told Villa News.
“He’s got all the attributes to be a top central defender, it just comes down to concentration. This is a good example where he’s a big guy, he’s good in the air and he just misjudged it.
“The worst thing sometimes when you’re having a little dip is you sit out and then the pressure builds, look at Harry Maguire as an example. When you come in there’s even more pressure for you to perform.
“He needs to take it back to being simple on the ball and building his confidence bit by bit and he will get over this, there’s no doubt.”

Mings will have to regain his form under a new manager after it was confirmed by Villa (club website, 20 October) that Steven Gerrard had been relieved of his duties.
The Villans now face a huge game against Brentford in their next Premier League fixture with the club teetering on the edge of the relegation zone.
