Rob Dorsett: Steven Gerrard needs results at Aston Villa quickly, relegation still no worry

Sky Sports reporter Rob Dorsett has made a promising Aston Villa relegation claim, despite the club currently sitting 17th in the table.

With just two wins in their first 10 league fixtures, Aston Villa find themselves hovering just above the relegation zone, with only their goal difference keeping them above Wolves.

Steven Gerrard finds his job at Villa Park under threat as a result of the team’s poor form, but Dorsett believes relegation isn’t a worry for Aston Villa this season.

Speaking via the Sky Sports Football Podcast, Dorsett (33:55) said: “When Dean Smith was sacked, Villa weren’t in trouble.

“But the Villa fans were told that it was because they need someone to take them to the next level and Gerrard at the moment isn’t taking Villa to the next level, so that’s very hard for Villa fans to stomach.

“There’s no danger of relegation, it’s a malaise and I’m sure they’ll improve and get out of it, but I think that Steven Gerrard needs some results pretty quickly, that’s pretty clear.”

Ambitious

Aston Villa fans will wish to have some of Dorsett’s confidence regarding relegation.

Sure, on paper Villa have a decent squad and should be competing for top-half spots instead of for survival. But for one reason or another it simply hasn’t happened and instead the Villans are under serious threat of relegation.

Performances haven’t been good enough and there are a handful of usually reliable stars that are struggling to find consistency this season.

Philippe Coutinho, Tyrone Mings and John McGinn are three players Gerrard would usually put his full trust in, but the experienced trio have all underperformed this season.

It seems that a managerial change is on the cards to try and rescue Villa’s season, but that by no means guarantees an improvement in performances.

There is still plenty of time to turn things around, and villa definitely have a squad capable of doing just that. But the league table doesn’t lie and fans are right to be worried.
