Alan Hutton: Striker will be high on Aston Villa priorities in January

We’re delighted to welcome former Aston Villa full-back Alan Hutton as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Villa Park.

Alan Hutton feels a striker will be high on Aston Villa’s January shopping list but admitted it’s a hard position to fill in the winter window.

Villa are the second lowest scorers in the Premier League with just seven goals scored so far in the 2022/23 season and missed countless chances in their latest defeat against Chelsea at Villa Park.

Hutton feels a new striker is something they will be looking at but isn’t sure if the club will pay a premium for an in-form frontman in the January window.

“It will probably be high up on their list but it’s also one of the most difficult positions to fill in the January transfer window,” Hutton exclusively told Villa News.

“Nobody wants to lose a top striker so you’ll have to pay a premium for that and are they going to be able to do that? I am not so sure.

“I think they’ve got more than enough talent within the dressing room, I think that’s why the frustration is coming from the fans because they can see the talent is there and it’s not exactly working at this moment in time.

“They just need a little confidence boost, one where it just hits off your leg and goes in or whatever, just to start the ball rolling.

“I think a lot of the strikers and midfielders are all in a situation where they’re looking at each other hoping that someone comes up with something. A little bit of luck is needed and hopefully, they can turn it around.”

Villa have a golden chance to rectify their goalscoring issues when they take on Fulham at Craven Cottage on Thursday (20 October).

Marco Silva’s team have one of the leakiest defences in the league and if Villa can’t score the writing could well be on the wall for Steven Gerrard.
