Alan Hutton: Aston Villa so unlucky in defeat v Chelsea

We’re delighted to welcome former Aston Villa full-back Alan Hutton as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Villa Park.

Alan Hutton feels Aston Villa were extremely unlucky not to score against Chelsea in their 2-0 defeat to Graham Potter’s side on Sunday (16 October).

The Villans were denied by an inspired Kepa Arrizabalaga who made a string of world-class saves to condemn Gerrard’s men to another Premier League defeat.

Hutton now feels the Villa boss should stick with a front free of Leon Bailey, Danny Ings and Ollie Watkins in hope of Villa finding some goalscoring form.

“I don’t see why not (remain with Bailey, Ings and Watkins upfront), he’s kind of tried a mix and match of all the different players but it’s just not quite clicked,” Hutton exclusively told Villa News.

“You see the game against Chelsea, it’s a couple of mistakes that leads to two goals which isn’t ideal but within that game, I thought Villa played well and had lots of chances. McGinn, Ramsey and Ings was denied by an unbelievable save by Kepa to be fair.

“They just need that little bit of luck and it’s just not running for them at this moment in time and hopefully Gerrard will be given the opportunity to lead them on.”

“I think it’s only five league games up until the break for the World Cup and if he can get it clicking before then hopefully they can go on a run.”

Wolverhampton Wanderers are the only side with a worse goalscoring record in the Premier League than Aston Villa and Gerrard will know he has to turn it around in their next two fixtures.

The Villans now face Fulham and Brentford in their next two fixtures with Gerrard likely to need two positive results to avoid his tenure being thrown into real doubt.
