Pressure building on Steven Gerrard’s job at Aston Villa – report

There is pressure building on Steven Gerrard’s job at Aston Villa after they lost 2-0 to Chelsea on Sunday, according to Matt Law.

Villa turned in a great performance but were beaten thanks to two Mason Mount goals either side of half-time, with Tyrone Mings gifting him the first before a stunning free-kick putting the game to bed.

But despite the improved performance from Gerrard’s side, Telegraph journalist and Villa fan Law revealed on his personal Twitter account that pressure is building on his job and the coming week is “huge” for him.

“Huge week ahead for Gerrard,” he said. “Pressure building on his job.”

Villa face newly promoted Fulham on Thursday night before a weekend clash with Brentford at Villa Park on Sunday.

Pressure

There has been big pressure on Gerrard for a few weeks now, but it’s easy to forget that the loss on Sunday was the first defeat in five that Villa have suffered.

Performances haven’t been good in those games though, and the way the team played against Chelsea was arguably the best they have played all season and yet it ended in defeat.

Aston Villa

Now with two huge fixtures this week, anything but positive results could see the end of his tenure as manager after around a year in charge having taken over from Dean Smith last year.

Gerrard has spent a lot of money since taking over at Aston Villa, including over £100m this summer, but he has been unlucky with his two major signings Diego Carlos and Boubacar Kamara suffering long term injuries.

But that’s not an excuse and this squad should be doing far better than it is currently, and Gerrard knows it. So do the fans and the board, and he is running out of time to change it.
