Tony Cascarino begs Aston Villa fans for patience with Steven Gerrard

Aston Villa are currently four games unbeaten in the Premier League but the pressure is still very much on for manager Steven Gerrard.

Their latest draw away at Nottingham Forest was a particular disappointment with the East Midlands club rock bottom of the division at the time and Villa above the drop zone.

The Villans could drop into the bottom three with a defeat against Chelsea on Sunday (16 October) but talkSPORT pundit Tony Cascarino wants fans to remain patient with the former England captain.

“Aston Villa need to take a leaf out of Arsenal’s book and hang in there a bit,” Cascarino said. “He’s been a little bit unfortunate, Leon Bailey had a big injury last year, Kamara this year, Diego Carlos has a bad injury.

“They were all big signings for the football club. I’d like to think he can turn it around but I just think it might be a tad too early. It’s been a difficult watch but I would like the Villa fans to give Gerrard time.”

Ticking clock

Gerrard is on borrowed time at Villa Park right now and he can’t afford to fall back into a losing streak if he wants to remain a Premier League manager for much longer.

Aston Villa are too big a club to be relegated right now and the chaos of the Championship is the last thing they need in the financial situation they find themselves in.

The boss was unable to make as many new signings as he would have liked in the summer as the need to sell before buying crept in as the window wore on.

The squad wasn’t big enough for a sale to come without a big hole being left in any given area so he had to stick with what he had and it is now being proven that it can’t quite meet the required standards.

It might soon be time for some of the club’s academy starlets to get their first chance on the big stage to give Gerrard a chance of extending his stay at Villa Park.

In other Aston Villa news, this international missed training at Bodymoor this week but he is still available to play against Chelsea.
