Alan Hutton insists Aston Villa must remain patient with Steven Gerrard

We’re delighted to welcome former Aston Villa full-back Alan Hutton as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Villa Park.

Alan Hutton has insisted that Aston Villa must remain patient when it comes to Steven Gerrard’s future after his side’s disappointing 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest.

The travelling fans were heard singing “Gerrard out” chants after the match at the City Ground as the pressure continues to grow on the Villa manager.

Hutton understands the frustration of the fans but feels the squad will click after a really slow start to the 2022/23 campaign.

“I understand their frustration, I really do and I know how difficult it can be to play there,” Hutton exclusively told Villa News.

“The expectation is through the roof, particularly with the money that’s been spent and they’re going to vent that frustration, particularly with the money that’s been spent. They’re going to a team that’s bottom of the league and they’re expected to win and it’s not quite happened.

“I just believe when the expectation is what it has been at the start of this season they’re going to voice their opinion and we all get it. We all see that the squad is full of ability and it’s not quite clicking at this moment in time.

“They’ve tried different formations and different players but it’s kind of the same old at this moment in time. I think with Steven Gerrard they have to stick to the process. There was a whole mentality that had to be changed within the club and he’s trying to do that. It’s going to take time so they have to be patient.”

Gerrard’s job doesn’t get easier as the Villans face Graham Potter’s Chelsea side at Villa Park on Sunday (16 October).

A negative result against Potter’s men could see Villa drop into the bottom three if Wolves pick up a positive result against Nottingham Forest on Saturday (15 September).
