Alan Hutton: Cameron Archer should be given Aston Villa first team shot

We’re delighted to welcome former Aston Villa full-back Alan Hutton as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Villa Park

Alan Hutton believes that Steven Gerrard should give Cameron Archer a first-team shot to ease his goalscoring woes in the coming weeks.

Villa are among the division’s lowest scorers and failed to score against ten-man Leeds United in their last Premier League outing.

Hutton suggests that Archer has proven his goalscoring ability during his loan spell last season and can’t understand why he wouldn’t be given a shot.

“I think he could, I think he’s shown during his loan spell and the opportunities in the first team that he can score goals,” Hutton exclusively told Villa News.

“He’s young and hungry and he’s desperate to do well and if you want to continue to use Watkins you can utilise him from a wider area and then allow Archer the opportunity.

“I don’t understand why he wouldn’t be given the chance considering that Steven Gerrard kept him in and around the squad for a reason.”

With just six goals this season, Villa really need to rectify their issues when it comes to putting the ball in the net. Their next fixture at Nottingham Forest looks like the ideal match to find their attacking touch again.

Steve Cooper’s side currently prop up the Premier League and are coming off a disappointing 4-0 defeat to Leicester City, who sit just one place above them.

There will be real concerns if Gerrard’s men fail to hit the back of the next in their next fixture on Monday evening [10 October].

In other Villa news, Aston Villa may need to manage player workload better according to Alan Hutton.
